Chairman Mao Policies
Successes:
- Land Reforms
- Spread of medical services
Failures:
- The Cultural Revolution- Mao created a problem and told people that there were capitalists and that they had to be removed. He formed the Red Guards and killed the capitalists. He closed China's schools and intellectuals were sent to the countryside to do manual labor. It failed because it destroyed China's cultural heritage and caused economic and social chaos.
- Great Leap Forward- this policy tried to increase agricultural and industrial
production. Large agricultural communes were established. Each family got a small plot of land and a share of the profits. Floods and bad harvests decreased production and caused famine. 40 million people died of hunger. The policy ended in 1962 and they went to a more traditional form of economic production. As a result, Mao lost power and his rivals took control of China.
